NHS App Training

Ubuntu Pledge, commissioned by NHS North West London, led a three-month project to enhance digital inclusion by training community organisations in RBKC, Brent, and Westminster on using the NHS app. The initiative aimed to empower community members to effectively access and utilize NHS digital services.

Project Scope

Ubuntu Pledge, commissioned by NHS North West London, undertook a three-month initiative to facilitate digital inclusion by training community organisations. This training focused on the use of the NHS app, which offers critical healthcare functionalities such as access to health records, repeat prescriptions, appointment bookings, and test results.

Core Training Components:

  1. App Download and Registration:
    • Download: Participants are guided through the process of downloading the NHS app on their smartphones.
    • Registration Requirements: Emphasis is placed on the necessity of an email address (for account registration) and a phone number (for two-way authentication security).
  2. Identity Verification:
    • ID Verification: Participants are required to verify their identity using one of the following: passport, driving license, or Biometric Residence Permit (BRP). This process, though thorough, can take up to 12 days for verification.
    • Alternative Verification via GP: For those without photo ID, a faster alternative is available. Participants can request an organisational code from their GP, comprising an activation account ID, ODS code, and passphrase, to verify their identity.
  3. NHS Number Requirement:
    • Participants are encouraged to bring their NHS number for a smoother registration process. If unavailable, verification can be done using postcode and personal details, though having the NHS number simplifies and expedites the process.
  4. Profile Linking:
    • Once registered and verified, the app links the user’s profile to the NHS database, providing access to personal health records and other NHS services.
    • Parents can link their profiles to their children's accounts, enabling them to manage their children's healthcare needs through the app.

Benefits of the NHS App:

  • Health Records: Access to comprehensive health records.
  • Repeat Prescriptions: Ability to request and manage repeat prescriptions.
  • Appointment Management: Book and manage GP appointments.
  • Test Results: View test results and other important health data.
  • Profile Linking: Connect and manage family health profiles.
